King Alfred Leisure Centre.

SmarterUK calls for urgent and immediate action to implement the planned knocking down and rebuilding of the King Alfred Leisure Centre on its current site.

The current facilities, some of which were built in the 1930s have not been fit for purpose for a generation now yet the council continues to talk about creating a “Flagship Leisure Facility” but after 8 years of consultation dating back to 2016 still have not acted.

The King Alfred Centre has a prime seafront location, and a combined private/public development seems the best way to provide immediate project funding via low-cost bank loans secured on the council’s substantial land and building assets. Securing a profit share deal in privately built high-value luxury flats on the site alongside the regenerated Leisure facilities would be a cost-effective way to fund a substantial element of the publicly owned Leisure Facility.  This appears to be the most cost-effective and easiest solution to deliver a fast solution, given the Council’s current spending restriction created by wasteful expenditure on “White Elephant” projects like the Brighton i360.
